Polokwane runners conquer Cape Town marathon

Corrie Calitz, chairperson of the Polokwane Athletic Club, said they were represented by a sizable number of athletes from the club.

POLOKWANE – Runners from Mzansi Athletics Club and Polokwane Athletic Club joined a myriad of international runners who participated in the Cape Town Marathon at GeenPoint Stadium in Cape Town on October 15.

The runners were able to compete and complete the race within regulated time and received medals.

Richard Bilisi, chairperson of Mzansi said the marathon was their first full marathon since the Comrades Marathon in July.

“We still have a lot of races to take on before the end of the year. We are preparing for the SARun4Cancer Marathon, Soweto Marathon, Kaapsehoop and Makgoepa Plunge. All these are coming in November, except the SARun4Cancer which is this month.”

Corrie Calitz, chairman of Polokwane Athletic Club.

He added that the marathon is an internationally recognised event with participants from various parts of the globe.

“The race, which gives runners an opportunity to explore the Cape Town scenery and mother city landmarks, sees different weather conditions in one race. Specifically, the Sanlam Race prepares runners to run in different weather conditions. It helps our runners to be fully prepared in terms of training both physically and mentally, as they know that they are going to compete with elite runners from Kenya and Ethiopia, just to mention a few. From races like these, runners learn so much from others through interaction and observation and when they come back from the race they share the lessons learned.”

Corrie Calitz, chairperson of the Polokwane Athletic Club said they were represented by a sizable number of athletes from the club.

“We had runners from the club and they enjoyed the marathon. We are preparing for the SARun4Cancer which is taking place at the end of October and everyone is ready.”
