Polokwane mayor announces slight reshuffle to mayoral committee

Polokwane mayor John Mpe said the slight reshuffle is a way to strengthen accountability as there are more committees responsible for oversight.

POLOKWANE – The Mayor of Polokwane John Mpe recently announced a slight reshuffle of his mayoral committee in a media briefing at the city’s council chambers.

The committee was restructured purely on the basis of having identified individual strengths and weakness and reallocating as such, he said.

Some faces were replaced by new ones, while old faces received new responsibilities.

This followed a question from the floor relating to whether the changes were affected by poor performances, since the councillors were given these portfolios in 2021.

Mpe emphasised that he does not tolerate slouching work and is, instead, an official who is quick to dismiss, adding that those incapable would have already been dismissed if that was the case.

The media briefing was at the backdrop of a council meeting held hours later at the same venue. During the sitting, councillors nominated and appointed never-seen-before portfolio committees and their chairpersons in terms of Section 79 of the Local Government Municipal Structures Act 117 of 1998.

This, Mpe said, speaks to the need for council to “establish one or more committees necessary for the effective and efficient performance of any of its functions or the exercise of any of its powers.”

According to a report on the sitting’s agenda, the committee will focus on legislative oversight, while the new Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) play a proactive executive administrative role.

Mpe said this is a way to strengthen accountability as there are more committees responsible for oversight.
