POLOKWANE – As children age, their inquisitiveness and need to burn energy increase, making play a crucial aspect of their development.

Pertunia Mahlaule, a playgroup instructor, says playtime is not merely for recreation but is essential for a child’s growth and learning.

“Play gives children the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow,” she explained. “It plays a significant role in promoting physical health by developing gross motor skills, coordination, balance, and building up bones and muscles. When a child runs around and climbs, they enhance their fitness while having fun.”

Cognitive skills are also sharpened through play. Activities including building with blocks, solving puzzles, and playing pretend help develop memory, concentration, and attention span.

“Colouring, cutting, and building with small blocks improve hand-eye coordination, finger dexterity, and precision,” Mahlaule says.

These skills are foundational for later tasks such as writing, drawing, and self-care activities.

Play is vital for social skills development. Interacting with peers teaches children to share, communicate, and build relationships.

Nancy Photo, a teacher at Little Shining Stars Preschool, highlighted that play is an intrinsic part of preschoolers’ nature.

“At this age, learners are naturally playful. As teachers, we adapt and incorporate play into their routine, ensuring they understand the balance between playtime and serious activities,” she said.

Photo observed that children develop faster when allowed to explore and make new discoveries.

“It’s fascinating to see how little minds work as they navigate and understand the world around them,” she concluded.
