Mokopane school garden harvests hope
Kgatelopele Primary School's garden gives students a valuable learning experience and now needs help to keep growing.
MOKOPANE – OnΒ the outskirts of Mokopane lies Kgatelopele Primary School, a school that relies on the norms and standards set by the Department of Basic Education.
Despite these challenges, the school has proudly maintained a vibrant garden for the past eight years, integrating it as a valuable learning tool for students.
Garden coordinator SS Ncube shares that the garden project offers a wonderful learning experience in several areas.
βWe focus on growing various greenery such as vegetables, fruits, and flowers. What I enjoy most is seeing the pride with which the learners tend to the garden. Itβs heartwarming to see them enjoy their work, and I am proud to say that sometimes, when we harvest, the learners take the vegetables home – not just to show off, but also to share with their families.β
The schoolβs vision is to teach learners that food doesnβt just come from shops, but also from the soil.
However, the school is now facing a challenge.
βAlthough a borehole provides ample water for the garden, we struggle with resources like garden tools and seedlings,β Ncube explains. βOur biggest challenge is understanding what types of vegetables our soil supports, as some crops thrive while others do not.β
In light of these difficulties, the school is appealing for donations to rejuvenate the garden.
βIt would be a privilege to meet a donor who can walk this path with us and support a new generation,β says Ncube.
He stressed the importance of keeping the garden tradition alive, noting how every learner who has worked in the garden walks proudly, eager to show off their hard work.
βI want to ensure that this tradition continues,β Ncube concludes.
