Vigilante attack leaves foreign man dead in Lephalale

Lephalale police are searching for suspects after a 39-year-old foreign national was killed in a suspected mob justice attack in Marapong.

LIMPOPO – The Lephalale police have launched a manhunt after a foreign national (39) was brutally murdered in a suspected vigilante attack in Marapong Extension 3 on Monday (May 12).

According to the Limpopo police spokesperson, Col Malesela Ledwaba, officers responded to reports of mob justice at around 08:00.

Upon arrival, they found a severely assaulted man lying on the ground. He was bleeding, partially clothed and in a critical condition.

Emergency medical services were called to the scene, and the victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

“The case was initially opened as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm but has since been changed to murder. The motive for the attack remains unknown, and no arrests have been made,” Ledwaba’s statement read.

The provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe condemned the incident, saying: “Vigilantism has no place in our society and constitutes a serious criminal offence. We urge community members to report suspected criminal activity to the police rather than take the law into their own hands.”

Anyone with information that can assist in the investigation is urged to contact Warrant Officer Renier Oosthuizen on 082 783 5624; call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or use the MySAPS app.
