Airport project in Giyani under scrutiny as Gaal flags legal concerns

Gaal condemns unauthorised development at the Siyandhani Airport in Giyani citing legal concerns and a lack of compliance.

LIMPOPO – The Gateway Airports Authority Limited (Gaal) has issued a stern warning following unauthorised infrastructure development at the Siyandhani Airport in the Greater Giyani Local Municipality.

The refurbishment and relaunch of the new F.Y Siyandhani Airport is a project spearheaded by a partnership involving the Siyandhani Traditional Authority and the Bombo Investment Group.

Gaal, the official custodian of all public aviation assets in Limpopo, expressed deep concern over what it calls a premature and potentially unlawful move.

According to a statement released on May 18, the Bombo Investment Group initiated site preparation works despite a directive from the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety instructing a halt to all planned activities.

“This facility is a state-owned aviation asset, and as such, any investment or development must follow due legal and regulatory processes,” the statement read.

Gaal warned that further steps taken without proper authorisation could violate public procurement laws.

The Bombo Investment Group, however, forged ahead with their plans. The airport launched its first phase as a private commercial airport with a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday (May 16) with the group declaring: “The future takes shape as site preparation begins at FY Siyandhani International Airport. We’re not just moving earth, we’re laying the foundation for Limpopo’s gateway to the world. Bombo Investment Group transforms vision into reality.”

The group added that this marks the first step in creating vital infrastructure that will connect our communities, create jobs, and drive economic growth across the region.

Gaal has since referred the matter to legal advisors, stating that appropriate actions will follow.

“We urge all prospective investors and stakeholders to respect due process and engage directly with Gaal and the department to ensure compliance,” the statement concluded.
