Limpopo police stop stolen vehicle en route to Zimbabwe

A stolen SUV, believed to be heading to Zimbabwe, was intercepted near Polokwane after a high-speed police chase that ended at the Nirvana intersection.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo police recovered a stolen SUV last Friday (May 16) following a high-speed chase that ended at the Nirvana traffic lights.

The Limpopo police spokesperson, Col Malesela Ledwaba, said members of the Provincial Flying Squad were on routine patrol when they received intelligence about a grey Toyota Cross stolen earlier this month in Pretoria Central.

“The vehicle was reportedly headed toward Zimbabwe via the N1. Police located the SUV outside Polokwane, but the driver sped off when officers tried to pull him over. A high-speed pursuit ensued until the vehicle was brought to a halt at the Nirvana intersection,’ Ledwaba’s statement read.

Upon searching the SUV, officers discovered a damaged tracking device that had been removed.

The 31-year-old driver was unable to provide proof of ownership and was arrested on the spot for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commended the officers for their swift action and commitment to curbing cross-border crime.
