Explosives seized from Zimbabwean national at Beitbridge Border Post

Explosives hidden in bags were seized from a Zimbabwean suspect at the Beitbridge border with the haul reportedly headed for Cape Town.

LIMPOPO – The Limpopo police arrested a 28-year-old Zimbabwean man for illegal possession of explosives at the Beitbridge Port of Entry last Friday May (16).

The suspect was apprehended during a routine inspection around 06:30 after a police dog unit detected suspicious packages inside a trailer being towed by a white Toyota Quantum.

The explosives were concealed in red 50kg polyester bags.

Specialists from the Musina Explosives Unit were called in and recovered the following items:

  • Six reels of detonating fuses
  • 2,505 Superpower
  • 90 blasting cartridges
  • 100 Carmex connector capped fuses

The suspect was charged under Section 28(1) of the Explosives Act 26 of 1956 for unlawful possession of explosives.

The explosives were rendered safe and samples sent for forensic analysis. Initial investigations suggest the consignment was destined for Cape Town.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the officers’ vigilance and inter-departmental collaboration.

“The interception of these explosives highlights the strength of our border security and the dedication of our personnel,” she said.

The suspect appeared before the Musina Magistrate’s Court yesterday (May 19).
