Limpopo BMX rider inspires a nation
From riding village goats to BMX glory, Maxwell Ndou's epic 1 741km ride to Cape Town inspires hope and pride in the Vhembe community.
LIMPOPO – From riding goats and old bicycles in the rural village of Tshithuthuni to completing a gruelling 1 741km journey from Burgersfort to Cape Town on a BMX, Maxwell ‘The Goat’ Ndou has proven that no dream is too wild, and no distance too far, when driven by passion and perseverance.
The spirited cyclist was honoured on May 18, during Tshithuthuni Day, where his arrival brought the village near Tshidongolowe in the Thengwe-Mutale area to a standstill.
Crowds gathered at Tshithuthuni Chief’s kraal, celebrating with ululations, traditional dances like tshigombela and songs from the local worship team. It was a homecoming fit for a hero.
Reflecting on his humble beginnings, Ndou said: “I used to ride goats and an old bicycle. When I told my parents I wanted to be a well-known cyclist, they laughed and said it was dangerous. I had no money to buy a better bicycle. But I never gave up”.
Ndou, along with teammates Gauta Mahlakoane and Karabo Mokoo completed their BMX journey in just 13 days. Their story quickly captured national attention, with support flooding in from social media, communities and government leaders.
Thovhele Vudzidzhena Nethengwe warmly welcomed the trio and announced plans to launch the Maxwell Foundation to empower local youth.
“This is a proud moment for our village. These young men have become symbols of hope.”
Provincial Government echoed this sentiment. Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba who stayed in close contact with the cyclists throughout their journey, praised their spirit.
“They didn’t just think outside the box, they kicked the box and redefined possibility. Their courage is a testimony to the potential of our youth.”
In celebration of their achievement, the government arranged a tour for the trio in Cape Town, including visits to Robben Island, Table Mountain and the V&A Waterfront.
A formal welcome reception is also planned back home, where they will be honoured and positioned as role models to inspire the next generation.
Maxwell Ndou left the community with a powerful message: “Work hard, stay focused on your dreams. One day, you’ll reach the sky”.
