Police honour Naboomspruit officer Sgt Nyiko Lelaka killed in R101 crash

Police and the community honoured Sgt Nyiko Lelaka, a Naboomspruit officer who died in a collision while transporting inmates to court.

POLOKWANE – The police, together with family, colleagues and the community, paid tribute to the late Sgt Nyiko William Lelaka, who died in a vehicle collision while on duty.

Lelaka, who was stationed at Naboomspruit Police Station as a court orderly, was transporting inmates to court on August 14, when the collision occurred.

A funeral service was recently held at the Mookgophong Community Hall.

SAPS members, representatives from Popcru and Sapu, Community Policing Forums, sister departments and community members attended the ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by police members across all ranks, representatives from the labour unions Popcru and Sapu, Community Policing Forums, sister departments and residents.

Provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, joined by Waterberg district commissioner Major Gen Venitia Masingi, described Lelaka as a dedicated officer who carried out his duties with integrity and selflessness.

“We honour him for faithfully executing our constitutional mandate with dedication, trustworthiness, and selflessness,” Hadebe said, offering condolences to the family.

Colleagues remembered him as a disciplined and humble officer who maintained strong working relations with judicial officers.

Hadebe assured the family that the police would continue to support them, while calling on his sons to carry forward his legacy of discipline and service.

Lelaka is survived by his wife and two sons.
