Limpopo’s top athletes to compete at national athletics meeting

The team comprises of athletes who performed well at the provincial athletics meeting which was held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on March 3.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Provincial Athletics Committee selected 240 athletes from various primary and secondary schools in the province for the national athletics meeting set for KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng in March and April.

The team comprises of athletes who performed well at the provincial athletics meeting which was held at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on March 3.

Leon Maakamedi, the chairperson of the Capricorn District athletics committee said the primary school team will compete with other teams from other provinces in KwaZulu-Natal from March 19-20, while the secondary school team will travel to Germiston in Gauteng from April 2-6.

“We are happy with the provincial team. We have learners from primary and secondary schools who have done well at the national event in the past, and some even set records. We are hopeful that they will come back home with medals.”

Andronica Somo, the secretary of the Polokwane athletics cluster said they are proud of the achievement from learners in the Polokwane Cluster.

“We have athletes from Greenside Primary School, Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos, Pietersburg Laerskool, Northern Academy, Tom Naudé THS, Eagle’s Nest, Dorothy Langa and Mitchell House. Some have been to the national event in the past and some will be representing the province for the first time. We wish all our athletes well in the event and we trust they will do well.”
