PCS security guard eyes future as teacher

Through his work in assisting parents, teachers and learners, PCS's security guard Samson Makgoba wants to pursue an education degree at a tertiary institution next year.

POLOKWANE – Samson Makgoba (46), a security guard at Pietersburg Comprehensive School, says he aspires to be a teacher in the near future.

He regards himself as more of access control officer as a security guard, and says his aspiration was triggered by the school environment and his constant interaction with teachers and learners.”It is never too late to follow your heart’s desire. No one is too old to further their studies. I joined the school in 2015 and I have created strong bonds with the teachers and learners. The school does things in a professional way and that is inspiring. Through this work I was able to learn about children and understand them better. I am thinking of enrolling at a tertiary institution next year for a degree in education.”

He says he prides himself on safeguarding the school and helping parents.”I do a whole lot of things at school. Not only do I ensure that the children and teachers are safe, but I also help with administration work at the school. I help parents with application forms and community members who want information about the school. My role is bigger than what people think. I often wait until all the children have been picked up by their parents.”

His advice to his fellow security officers is that they must be willing to do everything and be humble.”If I had stuck with a security guard mentality I would have limited myself to some things. I learn from parents, teachers and everyone.”
