PEPPS’ head of culture has big plans for the department

Katlego Mpepele shared that he is excited to fulfil his responsibility to the development of arts at the school and is buzzing with ideas and energy to take the school's cultural offering to the next level.

POLOKWANE – The head of department for culture at PEPPS Polokwane, Katlego Mpepele has big plans for the school.

He joined the school in 2021 and with his passion for creative arts, he is happy to share and impart his love for music and drama on learners, watch them grow, blossom and nurture their talents, he told Review.

“Cultural activities have an unseen benefit on a learner. Many spheres can be developed that contribute to a learner’s academic performance. You learn specialised techniques and discipline that can easily be transferred to any other task that a learner might attempt. They contribute to holistic learning which is our core mission at PEPPS,” he explained.

Mpepele shared that he is excited to fulfil his responsibility to the development of arts at the school and is buzzing with ideas and energy to take the school’s cultural offering to the next level. He indicated that his main focus is to create parity in their cultural offering from Gr 1 to Gr 12.

“I am excited to witness our talented learners expand and grow into themselves and their talents. I am governed by the philosophy that to be a master of something, you need 10 000 hours of practice. We as a school can provide that foundation for a learner to fulfil their dreams and goals,” he said.

Although they will not be introducing new offerings in terms of cultural activities, they will polish what they have already been offering.

The school has three major productions this year. The intermediate phase will be presenting their adaptation of Mamma Mia this month and the college will follow up with the classic ‘Godspell’ in July. The foundation phase will close off the stage with their adaptation of Around the World in 80 Days.

“Our choirs have competitions and tours to look forward to. Our chess learners are strong and will be competing on a bigger scale this year and we hope to have our very first art exhibition at the end of the year,” Mpepele concluded.
