Polokwane learners reflect on the true meaning of Easter

The Polokwane Review asked local learners to share what Easter means to them. Here’s what they had to say about faith, hope, and reflection.

POLOKWANE – Every year, Christians around the world celebrate Easter — a time to reflect on the suffering, crucifixion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

According to the Bible, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day and ascended to Heaven 40 days later.

The Polokwane Review asked local learners what Easter means to them:

Adriel Maponga (Eagles Nest Christian School): The celebration of the death and resurrection of our Christ Jesus. Being able to come together and acknowledge what the Lord has done for us as it states in Luke 24:6-7: “He is not here, but has been raised! Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and on the third day be raised again”.
Tshepang Mamabolo (Eagles Nest Christian School): It reminds us that the Messiah died for our sins, for eternal salvation. I personally think that as Christians we should celebrate Easter diligently and with great gratitude because it gives us a chance to remember the love that God has for us, where he sacrifices His only Son as mentioned in many scriptures, but most importantly in John 3:16.
Teaghen-Lee Joubert (THS Tom Naude): Jesus died for us and we celebrate Easter to remind us to be grateful that He died for our sins.
Mashoto Kunutu (Flora Park Comprehensive High School): It is a remembrance of the death of our Lord and Savior and to me it is a time to remember and celebrate the lives our loved ones who have passed on. We celebrate it to give thanks to the sacrifice He made to be killed for our sins.
Sebasa Ali Madisha (Enderun College): I’ve learned that even if I don’t celebrate Easter, I can still be kind and respectful to those who do. I believe that in life I must treat others with compassion, regardless of our religious differences. I understand how special Easter is to many people, so I chose to be supportive while staying true to my own beliefs.
Lesego Maake (Noorderland High School): On Easter, we give thanks to Jesus for everything that we have. With the death of Jesus, we became new creations. We rejoice about it by having special services at church.
Nyeleti Phakula (Flora Park Comprehensive High School): Easter is the period of remembrance. Jesus died for our sins, this is the time to ponder on what a big deal that is.
Gudani Ratshilingwa (Bet-Shalom Christian School): Aside from the fact that Easter celebration is to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Easter has also become a secular holiday with traditions like Easter eggs and the Easter bunnies, which have roots in pagan customs. That’s a fun way to celebrate the day as much as it’s an important celebration for us Christians.
Lefa Dease (Bet-Shalom Christian School): Being in a Christian school, they teach us that we celebrate Easter because it’s a day on which we as Christians, remember and celebrate the resurrection of Jesus.
Xihlenga Nkuzana (Eagles Nest Christian School): It was the day faith was restored in many hearts because Jesus Christ rose from the dead. We celebrate this day by looking around for Easter eggs that are hollow inside to symbolise how the tomb that had Jesus’s body was found empty. This holiday is a very happy time for me because I always win the egg hunts, but also because it renews hope in me that Jesus is alive and we now have a way to the father through salvation. E
Nkikita Motsimele (Noorderland High School): Easter is the opportunity to be one in remembering the sacrifice that Jesus made when He died for us.
