POLOKWANE – Noorderland High School has officially added rugby to its list of sporting codes, offering teams from u/14-u/19, with plans to introduce the sport for girls in the near future.
Rugby manager Ivan Harmse said the decision to introduce the sport was motivated by a desire to give learners the opportunity to participate in a team sport that fosters not only physical skills but also strong values.
“Rugby has a unique ethos that focuses on discipline, fair play and mutual respect. As Noorderland, we want to embody these values,” he explained.
The introduction of rugby has brought both excitement and pressure, particularly as schools across the region compete to identify and develop talented players. Harmse noted that while this search brings enthusiasm, it can also create stress for players and parents due to high expectations.
Currently, the school boasts 94 registered rugby players.
Practices are held every Tuesday and Thursday from 14:00-16:00 under the guidance of head coach Adam Adams and assistant coach Kamogelo Rabekane.
Training sessions focus not only on physical preparation but also on instilling the five core values of rugby: integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline, and respect.
“As time progresses, we will certainly begin to identify and nurture standout talent,” said Harmse.
Noorderland’s rugby teams are affiliated with the Blou Bulle Rugby Union Limpopo and currently compete in the Capricorn Hub Rugby Schools Sport League.
