Noorderland teacher changes how learners view maths literacy

Noorderland High School’s Jenifa Chipangura uses real-life examples to show learners the value of maths literacy.

POLOKWANE – Jenifa Chipangura, a passionate maths literacy teacher at Noorderland High School, is on a mission to show learners that maths is more than just numbers, but a life skill.

She has been teaching at the school for five years and finds her work deeply fulfilling.

“My passion for teaching was sparked by the need to help learners learn new things and apply them in real life. It has been a rewarding experience working with a dynamic team and the learners,” she said.

Chipangura aims to change the misconception that mathematical literacy is easier than pure mathematics.

“Mathematical literacy is not too abstract. Learners can relate the subject content with everyday life scenarios, which I find fulfilling,” she said.

She incorporates practical examples into her lessons, including personal finance, interpreting salary advice slips, reading IRP5 certificates and even measuring ingredients for recipes.

“This helps them see the practicality of the subject and how it applies outside the classroom,” she added.

Chipangura believes in a learner-centred approach. Her classes include group discussions, hands-on projects, and guided discovery to keep lessons engaging.

“Another misconception is that maths literacy is only for those who struggle with maths, but it’s valuable for anyone wanting to acquire numeracy skills,” she said.

To maintain structure, she and her learners set expectations and rules at the start of the year.

She uses positive reinforcement to keep morale high.

“It’s important to incorporate varying teaching methods to avoid boredom in learners and maintain interest,” she concluded.
