The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in partnership with former Blue Bulls player John Mametja will host the Limpopo Rugby Day at Ephraim Mogale Stadium on Saturday.
The purpose of the event is to develop young talent from rural areas.
Spokesperson for the Department, Kola Maila explained that the day will also be utilised to celebrate the achievements of Mametja. “He is a role model for young rugby players as he is the first black South African to have played in 100 Currie Cup matches,” Maila said.
“After hanging up his boots around 2009, he established the John Mametja Foundation which aims at developing young talent among rugby players from rural areas,” Maila said.
The programme will include two matches, one for women and one for men, that will assist in determining what talent and skills exist among the players.
“Through those two matches we will be able to identify the talented players which will go into camp. We want to give everyone a chance to play the sport because we believe there are lots of talented players in the rural areas but they are not given a platform to showcase their talent,” Mametja said.
