The first ever Hanlie Steyn Memorial Race is set to take place on 10 September in honour of blind runner Stefan Steyn’s wife, Hanlie who passed away last year.
Polokwane Athletic Club (PAC) President Corrie Calitz said Steyn who had run more than ten Comrades Marathons always had the support of his wife despite her fighting cancer. “Steyn approached the club last year to have a race organised in honour of his wife and we are proud to announce that the first Hanlie Steyn Memorial Race to be hosted this year,” Calitz added.
“It will be an emotional event for participating athletes,” Calitz said.
The race will comprise 5 km, 10 km and 21,1 km options. Entry fees are R30, R50 and R80 respectively and temporary licences are available at R30.
Pre-entries can be done on the Friday prior to the race at Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos from 16:30 to 19:00 while athletes are also welcome to enter on the day of the race from 05:00 to 06:15. The race is set to start at 06:30. Calitz said the race will be presented under the rules of Athletics South Africa and International Association of Athletics Federations. Athletes caught running with earphones will be disqualified. Licences and race numbers must be visible. Cut-off time for the 21,1 km is 3 hours and winners must attend the prize giving ceremony in order to receive prize money. For more information contact Calitz on 082 464 1963.
