Polokwane hosted a very successful ParaVolley Provincial League in Westenburg recently with local team Capricorn finishing third overall.
University of Venda claimed victory after a tough battle for the top provincial position. Team Thohoyandou was second.
A further purpose of the event was to identify players for the provincial team who will participate in the national championships later this month.
“We had six teams from across the province participating. It was a very special and successful event and we only received positive feedback from other clubs,” Capricorn player and coach and provincial ParaVolley Public Relations Officer, Moloko Phete said.
She added that the provincial team will face teams from Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Eastern Cape and North West during the national championship which also promises to be a big event.
“We also had fantastic support from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture with Junior Ramusi, Director of Sport at the department attending the event,” Phete said.
Departmental Spokesperson Jermina Kaka said the department has recommitted itself to the revival of disability sport in the province.
“This comes after thorough research in communities which revealed that disabled sport in various communities is not operational. ParaVolley’s aim is to promote social cohesion, nation building and integration as the games are played by both able and disabled people,” Kaka said.
