Black Leopards Football Club beat Santos 2-1 in the third match of National First Division (NFD) played in Cape Town on Sunday and now lies in seventh position of the division.
Former Orlando Pirates striker Mwape Musonda scored the opening goal for Lidoda Duvha, before Tyren Arendse levelled for Santos. Veteran midfielder Morgan Shivambu scored the winner in the second half of the match to give Leopards their first victory of the 2016/17 NFD season.
“It was a good victory for the team and will set a good tone for the season. We lost the first match against Amazulu and drew against Jomo Cosmos and that did not sit well with us. We need to maintain a winning streak in order to realise our dream of getting promotion to the Premier Soccer League,” Spokesperson for the Club Berry Ramunenyiwa said.
He stated that they will collect maximum points against Milano United whom they will face at Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday. “Our intention this is paralyse every team that comes to Thohoyandou, in fact all the teams in the NFD. We played them last season, we won some and lost some but this is a new season altogether and we want to collect every point,” Ramunenyiwa said. Meanwhile Magesi Football suffered their second loss of the NFD at the hands of Stellenbosch Football Club who beat them 2-0 at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday.
General Manager of the team Hero Makgamatha attributed the loss to nerves and lack of NFD experience.
“We played well and dominated the game but we could not score. It is frustrating when we lose home matches because it has a negative impact on the supporters. Nevertheless, we still have the potential to win every match,” he said.
He was confident that they would do well against Witbank Spurs whom they play at Puma Rugby Stadium on Saturday. “We have to win the match. We are can’t afford to lose the match, we have never played them before and we are confident that we will come back home with three points,” Makgamatha said.
