Polokwane City Football Club’s MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) team has all the experience to challenge for the title of the 5th edition MDC which will commence at Hammersdale Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.
This is the conviction of Bayano Moloto, the team’s head coach who believes they will be crowned the winners at the end of the season. Polokwane City finished 12th in the previous season.
“We want to win it. We did well last season and I think we know the demands of the challenge and we are ready to compete for the title,” he said. He added they were pleased to have former MDC player, Nicholas Motloung in the starting berth of Polokwane City’s first team.
Motloung captained the side last season before his promotion to the first team in July. “He served us well last season and we are not surprised by the move. He is hard working and very disciplined. His promotion to the first team validates the objectives of the MDC, because this initiative is about the developing soccer players,” Moloto said.
The MDC is a Premier Soccer League (PSL) reserve league aimed at supporting development in football countrywide. In the past the challenge produced the likes of Siyabonga Ngezana from Kaizer Chiefs Football Club and Siphesihle Ndlovu, from Maritzburg United, both currently in the Bafana Bafana setup.
The challenge will also welcome newly promoted Black Leopards Football Club. Club spokesperson, Berry Ramunenyiwa said the challenge will serve a stepladder for aspiring soccer players in the province.
“Most of our players in the MDC team are from the province. This is an opportunity for them to showcase their talent, sharpen their skills and also impress the first team coaches. We are aware that it will be a new platform for them, we believe they will make the best of it. We want to win everything in the league and that includes the MDC title,” Ramunenyiwa said.
