A group of local businesspersons embarked on a three-day, 496 km cycling tour from Senwabarwana to Gauteng recently to create awareness about cycling and also to fulfill their dream of riding from Polokwane to Johannesburg.
Ndavhe Ramakuela, former Director of Community Development at Polokwane Municipality joined by businesspersons Thabo Thobakgale, Phillip Mudau, Shaun Ramahlodi, Jacques Coetzee and Sarel Lubbe cycled from Senwabarwana to Modimolle on the first day.
Day 2 took them 126 km along the R101 to Montana in Pretoria. On day three they followed a 130 km circle route from Carnival City to Suikerbosrand where the cyclists tackled the mountains of the area before returning to their base for the day.
Ramahlodi who organised the tour, said: “We are new cyclists who started cycling a year and a half ago. We believe that with cycling we could achieve greater things even beyond what we initially had imagined, participating in races, raising awareness through community projects and recreation in general. We made the journey in three days. That was phenomenal and beyond our wildest imagination.”
Thabo Thobakgale, co-organiser, said the tour marked the beginning of many such projects. “We have started something that we believe will become much bigger. We have learnt a lot from this and know what we need to get future tours organised, either through our club, Polokwane Joyride, or through individuals like we have done now. The five of us from Polokwane learnt an invaluable lesson and this has prepared us for future races.
Ramakuela said cycling from Limpopo to Gauteng was a very fulfilling. “I still feel good enough for some more,” he stated.
