The annual Polokwane Mayoral Golf Cup is halfway towards reaching its 2018 target of R1,5 million which will enable young people from impoverished families to further their studies at various institutions of higher learning in the next academic year.
This follows Executive Mayor Thembi Nkadimeng’s announcement during the official launch of the challenge at the Polokwane Golf Club on Tuesday that they have so far secured sponsorships amounting to R900 000. She stated that they were hoping to reach the target before or on the day of the competition scheduled to take place at the Polokwane Golf Club on 30 November.
Nkadimeng emphasised that sport has been the greatest contributor to the Executive Mayor’s Bursary Fund through various partnerships that have benefited disadvantaged learners and charity organisations.
“Last year, the challenge raised in excess of R900 000 that was a major boost to the bursary fund. So far over 129 young people benefitted and it is our wish that more youths can benefit from the bursary fund. We appreciate the support we enjoyed over the past six years and we believe that there is more that we will continue to enjoy from this partnership,” Nkadimeng stated.
She further stressed that business people and companies open their wallets and sign cheques not because they want to please the municipality but because they want to contribute to humanity and education.
Kagisho Mathosa, the Provincial Manager: Public Sector of a financial institution indicated that they were proud to be associated with the challenge because the money they contribute was for a good cause.
Dawid Maree representing another sponsoring company reiterated that they are always keen to give back to communities, adding that the golf challenge was a great opportunity for them to assist young people to make their dreams a reality.
