The province’s grannies football club, Vakhegula Vakhegula proved their commitment and passion for the sport when they walloped France’s grannies soccer club 10-0 in an international friendly game to claim a trophy.
The match between the two rivals was played during the 2019 Fédération Internationale de Football Association (Fifa) Women’s World Cup in France recently. Vakhegula came home on Monday with two trophies, one for winning the game and another one serves as recognition to team founder Beka Ntsanwisi for a job well done in keeping grannies football active. Ntsanwisi could not hide her excitement when she narrated the trip to France as she indicated that the team was treated like a royal family. She stated that they also scooped gold medals and reiterated that the team did exceptionally well.
“Grannies football started in Limpopo and it is now recognised across the globe. Our team was cheered and appreciated at every street corner in France which shows that Vakhegula are acknowledged for the good work. We will soon start preparations for matches against Japan, Poland and Germany scheduled for next year. My other wish is to host a mini-grannies world cup in Limpopo in 2021 for which France has already pledged support,” Ntswanwisi explained.
She further said she was planning on meeting with Premier Stan Mathabatha, Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Thandi Moraka and Economic Development, Environment and Tourism MEC Thabo Mokone to request support as the planned mini-world cup would contribute to the local economy. Ntsanwisi applauded the players, team managers, doctors and sponsors for a job well done and further thanked them for not taking the initiative lightly.
