Football fanatics in the city and surrounds can look forward to some intense contests and impressive skills that are anticipated to characterise the Chief and Joessy (C and J) United FC top eight knock-out soccer tournament set for this weekend at Lesedi Park sport field.
The toss is set for today (Thursday) while the games are scheduled to commence at 08:00 for the u.13 challenge and the matches for the u.19 are expected to kick-off at 13:00 on Saturday. On Sunday both age groups will compete in the semi-finals and the finals for the champions to be crowned. Soccer teams that are set to compete in the challenge include the hosts, Phalaborwa Goal Fighters, Mankweng Candy Brothers, Seshego Shouting Stars, Luthuli Brothers, Luthuli All Stars, Lebowakgomo Madrid Academy, Seshego Dark City, Fast Football Development Centre Polokwane, Black Beats and Polokwane Youth Academy.
C and J United team manager Tshepo Magongwa indicated that the first place finishers will receive a trophy, gold medals, a soccer ball and ten bibs. The first runners-up will take home silver medals and ten bibs and the third place finishers bronze medals. He said thus far monetary prizes are not at stake due to lack of funding but highlighted that the tournament was for fun and also served as a platform for youth to showcase their talent.
According to Magongwa, the tournament is a way of celebrating the club’s first anniversary. He further indicated that the team is currently playing in the Polokwane Local Football Association (Polfa) in all the age categories. Since it came into existence the club has participated in different big tournaments such as the Phillys Games for u.13 in Mokopane where they finished in second place.
More recently they were crowned champions of the Lebogang Zane tournament for u.15s and winners of the Luthuli u.16 soccer tournament.
