Fencers show off

POLOKWANE – Raven Fencing Club hosted the Conventions of Fencing Conference last Saturday, where among other things, fencers learned about the importance of the rules of fencing.

During the morning session, there was a slideshow with illustrations, as well as demonstrations to show how the rules should be applied.

“The day was created to emphasise that the theoretical facets are part of the physical application of the sport,” said Willie Botha, coach of Raven Fencing Club and organiser of the conference.

“The Raven club is unique in the sense that it is one of the very few clubs that makes theory an integrated part of their coaching.”

Sello Maduma, Olympic fencer, motivated the fencers, advising them on how to handle winning and losing.

“It is important to always be professional, on and off the piste,” said Maduma.

The fencers who passed the theoretical course received certificates presented by Maduma.

After lunch, there was a Raven Club Challenge, which was sponsored by CapriCom Wireless Communications. During the challenge, everyone, whether a fencer or not, had the opportunity to show how they could handle a weapon and achieved points for the quickest time.

Just like in a normal competition, there were elimination rounds, and in the final, Aluwani Raphalalani was announced the winner.

“I did not expect to win, I am very happy,” he said after receiving his medal.

One of the other fencers, Cian Goemmine, said he thought the day was a huge success.
