Muni honours youth with tournament

SHAYA Black Pool Football Club from Ward 20 in Shawela/Maphalle area won this year's Greater Letaba Municipality Wolkberg Cup 2015.

LIMPOPO – SHAYA Black Pool Football Club from Ward 20 in Shawela/Maphalle area won this year’s Greater Letaba Municipality Wolkberg Cup 2015, which was held at Sekgopo sports complex on Saturday.

The tournament was played in a round robin format, and this was the first time the tournament was held at the new sports complex since its completion.

Black Pool received six points against Impala Boys from Matshwi in Ward 11, which received three points.

Black Pool walked away with soccer gear, a trophy, balls and gold medals.

In women’s soccer, Lebaka FC from Mohlabaneng village won after they defeated their opponent, Thibeng FC. They received a trophy and gold and silver medals respectively.

Sekgopo, the host team, won the netball competition and was followed by Madumeleng and Mohlabaneng respectively.

In gymnastics, Rathaga Primary School from Bodupe village in Ward 2 won and received kit and skipping rope.

Masalanabo High School from Khetlhakoni village came in second place, while Magizele High School was in third place.

Speaking during the prize-giving ceremony, the Greater Letaba mayor, Godfrey City Modjadji said they decided to host the tournament this month to celebrate Youth Month with young people in the municipality.

“This is our way of saying thank you to the young people who fought bravely for the freedom we currently enjoy,” Modjadji said.

He said the municipality invested a lot of money in this tournament in order to assist in unearthing talents in various wards around the Greater Letaba area.

Modjadji called on young people to take sport seriously as it might become their future careers if they played well.

He added that the municipality was building sports complexes and gymnasiums in various wards in order to get more young people involved in sports at ward level.
