POLOKWANE – WITH the Brutal Fruit Premier Netball League now over, the focus has shifted to district leagues, and this spells excitement for teams who have their sights on winning the Polokwane Netball Association League (Polneta).
Polneta president, Cosy Rabothata, says the league will start on June 29.
Polneta, which is only limited to teams in the Polokwane Municipality, is one of the biggest netball programmes that produced one of the remarkable starlets of the game.
The league’s development structure focuses on youngsters in the u/12, u/15 and u/19 age groups who, over the years, graduated to provincial and national set-ups.
“Some of the young players who we groomed through our development structure have played for the Spar National Championships. We have so far played a crucial role central to Netball South Africa’s developmental schema. We will continue to do so as more and more young girls still show enthusiasm for the sport. We call on other netball teams to affiliate their young players to this league as its primary goal is the development of the game,” says Rabothata.
“As we operate within the perimeters of the Polokwane Municipality, we play a central role during the staging of the Mayoral Cup and almost every player from our structures participates in the tournament.”
At the end of the season, three teams are promoted to the Capricorn District League.
Last year’s winners, Seshego Hot Beans, Moria Sweepers and Cavella, were promoted to the district league and have acquitted themselves on the court of play.
The promotion of these teams effectively paved way to newcomers, Mankweng-based Cargo Sport Academy, Moria Sweepers (juniors), Polokwane Rising Stars and Seshego Young Fighters.
Cargo Sports Academy head coach and principal, Cargo Mamabolo, says the players are very excited at the prospects of being part of Polneta.
“The excitement at the academy is almost tangible. The young girls have been waiting for this moment and now that it has arrived, they can’t hide their enthusiasm. And with this level of eagerness, I am upbeat that they will give a good account of themselves.
“Most of the players in the team are highly motivated to become star players in the national fold,” says Mamabolo.
