Basketball greats gear up for tourney

The stage is set for what promises to be an exhilarating Youth Basketball Tournament scheduled for Thursday and Friday at the Seshego outdoor courts.

LIMPOPO – The competition is one of the flagship tournaments on the Limpopo Basketball calendar of events where youngsters are given an opportunity to display their swashbuckling confidence and skills on the court.

The annual tournament features feisty teams in the u/14, u/16 and u/19 age categories in both gender groups. The teams that have confirmed their participation include Seshego Sonics, Solomondale Pacers, Koloti Knicks, Lebowakgomo Rasplaas, Botlokwa Eagles, Malamulele Chill-Shooters, Stars, Makhado Votex, and Sandsloot Top Dogs.

The Mahwelereng township will be represented by the Vampires and the Terminators.

The tournament will provide the perfect platform for SJ van der Merwe High School of Lebowakgomo, Polokwane’s Capricorn High School and Mapankula Primary School who will prepare for their seasonal school games.

In the broader scheme of things, the homeside Seshego Sonics u/18 boys will be the team to watch as they are the defending champions after they won the competition during last year’s edition.

Sonics revel in the fact that they are rarely under pressure because of the burden of a favourite tag.

In the u/18 girls group, Pacers are the reigning champions.

The young women from Solomondale are a lot more competitive than in recent years after a barren spell.

The team is now led by head coach, Phetolo Mahana, who has placed his hope in a group of talented and vastly experienced teenage boys and girls.

Terminators are the defending champions in the boys and girls u/14 and u/16 categories and Sonics will use every trick in the book to defend the coveted u/18 floating trophy.

Despite the departure and promotion of master-bluster David Moloto into the senior team, Sonics remain formidable and dangerous when playing in front of their fanatical home crowd.
