Lavish gala evening set to honour Lim sports stars

GET out of your sporting regalia and dress to the nines to give a standing ovation to athletes who have stood the test of time!

It is that time of the year when the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture honours aptitude for exceptional and shrewd administration on the domestic sporting landscape.

This is a black tie gala dinner scheduled for Saturday, 17 September in Polokwane, that offers appreciation of great sportsmanship. Departmental Spokesperson, Kola Maila, says: “The department aims to recognise superb achievements by athletes across the length and breadth of the province. It seeks to encourage and motivate many unsung heroes and heroines in all communities.

“We intend on reigniting confidence in our promising stars. The awards serves as a message to young talent, that if they work hard and hone their skills; they too will win awards”.

There are a plethora of names of individual performers, federations and those in the echelons who have availed themselves to the satisfaction of those who have witnessed them perform exceptionally well on the sports fields.

The Limpopo Softball Association would not heed to play second fiddle.

After all, they are the federation that won the national championship on their home turf in Polokwane under the auspices of Softball South Africa, a title head coach Lemo Raphasha vows to defend should he be re-instated at the helm of the provincial senior men’s team.

There is a young man in softball circles who recently provided a glimmer of hope for the future of softball in the province. Kwena Nkuna has just returned from the United States where he showed his peers glimpses of brilliance during the 2016 Junior Men’s World Championships.

The teenage protege from Sekhukhune has been nominated for several prestigious awards.

The Motlolo Roots pace man was the key leader of his country’s attack at Curries Stadium at Emerson Park, Midland in Michigan.

The Limpopo Volleyball Association has also faired well during the recent National Championships in Bloemfontein.

Nape Primary School from Mmotong has been punted as the School Team of the Year. Two of their teams entered big competitions and won gold and bronze medals respectively. The school has performed exceptionally well for three consecutive years.

Mamarama Secondary School from Ga-Ramakgaphola in Moletjie could walk away with the Developing Team of the Year accolade.

Benny Boshomane could be honoured as the Volunteer of the Year.

He was the Chef de Mission during the 2016 Junior Men’s World Championships.
