A fun way to keep healthy

Charlene Pieterse, a teacher at a local school, says she has found the perfect way to stay fit and enjoy exercising in the form of cycling.

POLOKWANE – She urges residents to take up cycling, which she has grown to love more and more every time she goes for a ride. She describes it as a fun way to get in shape and appreciate the scenery in the city.

Charlene says she used to cycle a lot more when she was younger but later gave it up for jogging. It turned out the latter was not her forte and she got right back into cycling. “I borrowed my mother’s bicycle and went riding with my father, sister and her husband,” she says. Charlene will participate in her first 50 km race on 22 October when she takes part in the Sondela Nature Reserve race. “I will take on the 50 km race while my brother in-law will tackle the 107 km.

“I need a lot more practice before I can try that race,” she jokes.

She trains on her own but says cycling is great way for families to exercise together. Cycling can be an expensive sport and Charlene suggests people should contact a bicycle dealer for assistance when choosing their first bicycle. She says a starter bicycle can cost as much as R10 000 but it is a great investment for a longer, happier life.
