Athletes honour Hanlie’s memory

The Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC) hosted a special memorial race to raise awareness about cancer in memory of the late Hanlie Steyn, wife of well-known attorney, Stefan Steyn.

POLOKWANE – After a long fight against cancer, Hanlie died a year ago and the race was the first of its kind that will be held to commemorate her life and the lives of many others who have lost the fight against cancer.

The race was held at the fields of Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos and saw more than 200 athletes take part in the 21 km, 10 km and 5 km races. PAC President, Corrie Calitz, said Stefan, who has taken part in more than 10 Comrades Marathons, always had the support of his wife despite her illness.

“Stefan approached the club last year and asked if we could organise a race in honour of Hanlie and we are proud to have hosted the first Hanlie Steyn Memorial Race this past weekend,” Calitz added.

“It was an emotional event for participating athletes,” Calitz said. Hanlie was diagnosed with cancer in 2001 when their youngest child, Amanda, was only six months old.
