New greenskeeper’s performance on par
Polokwane Golf Club's new greenskeeper, Regardt Barnard (31), makes sure the club's golf course stays on par.
POLOKWANE – Despite water restrictions and dry conditions in recent months, the Polokwane Golf Club has never looked better due to the hard work and dedication of Regardt who has gone above and beyond to ensure the course stays in mint condition.
BONUS spoke to the newest member of the Polokwane Golf Club team to find out what his work entails and what drives and motivates him to work hard.
“I’m responsible for fertiliser projects, spraying projects and the maintenance of the golf course,” Regardt said.
He explained that he always had a deep love for the outdoors and worked on his father’s farm before striking out on his own.
Regardt earned his agriculture diploma and received a degree in turf-grass management which he completed while abroad in Estonia, Northern Europe.
“I always liked golf and played a lot myself so it is fitting for me to work as a greenskeeper because I’m familiar with the sport,” Regardt explained.
Regardt worked at a golf club in Estonia for three years where he won the Greenskeeper of the Year award.
He returned to South Africa and started working at the Polokwane Golf Club at the start of this year.
“I enjoy my job a lot because I am always outside. When you’re in the business of greenskeeping, you can’t hide your hard work, it is in the open for everyone to see and appreciate, this makes my job very satisfactory,” Regardt explained.
He added that even though he enjoys his job, it also comes with its challenges. “It is very important to build a good relationship with your staff which can be difficult at times.
“The staff at the club had to get used to the way I do things and I had to allow them to do certain things the way they liked to do them, it’s all about compromise.”
Regardt said every day is different and offers its own unique challenges.
“We prioritise certain practices and ensure they get done early in the day in case something comes up later,” he said.
Regardt explained that he works almost every day. They are constantly preparing the course for golf competitions that take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
No matter how busy he gets, he still makes time to go hunting, fishing and to work on the family farm where they farm with cattle.
He revealed there are big plans in the pipeline for the Polokwane Golf Club, such as tree planting projects, and improving some of the bunkers and tee boxes, among others.
“I love this job, it is something to be proud of,” said Regardt.
