Clubs square off in fencing

POLOKWANE – As part of preparations for the provincial fencing competition, which takes place later this year, Polokwane Fire Bird Fencing Club hosted a friendly fencing competition against Mokopane’s Eresabel Fencing Club at Bolivia Lodge on Saturday.

Senior and junior fencers participated in this competition.

Tersia Goosen, Fire Bird Fencing Club’s manager, said they aimed to promote and nurture the sport and hopefully attract young people.

“We only have two fencing clubs in Limpopo and that is not enough. We hope to recruit young people to join the sport so that we can take it to the next level and confidently compete internationally,” she said.

These two teams competed in the South African Fencing Championships at Sommerset West in September, and returned with a gold medal in the u/13 category and a bronze medal in the u/20 category.

Goosen said fencing was not dangerous and the competitors had discipline in and outside the arena. The Fire Bird Fencing Club has 12 members.

“Fencing is expensive, but anyone who wants to join will be given a fencing kit that they can use until they are financially able to buy their own. We call on companies to assist us with equipment.” According to Goosen, fencing equipment is only found in other countries and is imported to South Africa. A fencer needs R4 700 to buy a fencing kit.

Anyone who is willing to sponsor the sport can contact Goosen at 073 450 2224.
