Cappies girls break soccer mould
Even though soccer is mainly seen as a male sport, several female learners from Capricorn High School are breaking the mould by showcasing their soccer skills on the field.
POLOKWANE – The girls’ soccer team at Capricorn have been up and running for a while now and the coach, Isaiah Sehlapelo, said although most of the players are still beginners, they show great potential and interest in the sport. Some of them, he added, play at club level with teams playing in the Absa and Sasol leagues. “They play school league games against other schools around Polokwane, and so far so good,” he said.
He pointed out some of the challenges that come with coaching girls and teaching them to play soccer and said: “There aren’t so many challenges but the most prevalent is finding a player who has no idea about how soccer works who joined because her friends played soccer. The challenge as a coach is to have patience with new players so you will be able to teach as well as guide them from learning the basics of soccer to becoming great at the sport”.
Soccer involves a lot of running, before, during and after the game which means it is a demanding sport when it comes to fitness and stamina. It requires a lot of practice and passion in order to successfully play it.
The Capricorn High School girls’ soccer team is currently preparing for school league matches and are eager to put their skills and training to the test.
