Saturday DIY: coffee filter art
Looking for something fun to do with your child today? Try out this craft using just coffee filters and supplies you likely have at home.
This fundamental exercise doubles as an art project and a science experiment. Children get to watch a scientific phenomenon called chromatography in action while making some lovely coffee filter art!
Chromatography is the separation of a mixture (for example, marker ink) by passing it through a medium (for example, a coffee filter) in which the components of the mixture (for example, the numerous colours that make up any given marker colour) flow at different rates.
What you need
- Filter for coffee
- Markers
- Cup filled with water
- A pipette made of plastic
How to make it
- Let your child use the markers to draw on the coffee filters.
- Then drip water onto the designs with a disposable pipette. The water will spread the colour from the markers.
Top tip: Use a small amount of water rather than completely soaking the coffee filters.
