Smash-and-grab at Walkhaven dog park

A vehicle was broken into at Walkhaven

A sunny afternoon at the Walkhaven Dog Park quickly turned sour for one Muldersdrift resident after her car was broken into on November 17.

Natalyn Potwig was out with her dog at Walkhaven and was stunned to find the window smashed when she returned to her car. “I went back to the car to fetch a blanket because I wanted to sit under a tree with my dog,” she began. “I noticed glass lying on the ground and realised that my window had been broken on the driver’s side. My bag, textbooks and everything else that were in the car had been stolen.” Besides the car itself, the only items they didn’t take were her keys, service manual and water bottle Even the cubby hole had been left ajar.

Portwig said in the midst of her shock a car pulled up next to her and the occupants asked what had happened. “They said they had also noticed another car with a broken window in the same place. I spoke to a few other people that were there and another lady said she had heard an alarm go off and then a car drove off.” She said she suspected that the criminals travelled by car.

The resident shared how unsafe she had been feeling since the incident. “It is really unfortunate because it is such a lovely place but I don’t feel safe anymore. When I was opening my case, there was someone else there reporting a similar incident. So many people go there and obviously you will park your car and walk around. You aren’t going to be at your car the entire time.” She quipped that she wished the break-in had happen when she was closer to her car because her dog is huge.
