Lions inspire boys to become good men
The Wilro Lions treated two local youth soccer teams to a day of fun and learning on Mandela Day.
The Lions Club of Wilro Park, known as the Wilro Lions, held a special Mandela Day celebration on Saturday, July 18, with the focus firmly on youth development.
According to chairperson Delphine Ferreira, the event, held in collaboration with Sedgwick Insurance, featured two U16 soccer teams from local informal settlements, who were invited by the Wilro Lions to participate in the day-themed Boys 2 Good Men.
“The boys were treated to insightful talks from six facilitators, each dealing with a pressing issue facing today’s youth,” she says.
The talks dealt with topics like the power of education, how to deal with challenges with girls, violence, decision-making, and trusting each other, and were preceded by a message from a local priest about choices in life.
“Each boy also received a goodie bag, a clothing voucher, and a delicious meal.
“Community Led Animal Welfare also visited, introducing the boys to some of the animals in their care, and teaching them about the important work they do in communities, after which the boys faced each other on the soccer pitch for an exciting game.”
