What started as a Checkers Little Shop minis exchange initiative between community members has grown into a passion for giving back and helping those in need.

Before embarking on their charitable initiative, Michelle Thomson and her mother, Desiree Taljaard, turned to local community WhatsApp groups in search of people willing to exchange minis so they could complete their collection.

Seeing how helpful the community was, Michelle started giving away her extras for an exchange of dog food to donate to local animal shelters.

“This was last December, and the turnout was overwhelmingly amazing. We managed to collect dog food cans, blankets and pillows, and we donated them to a few animal shelters,” said Michelle.

Touched by the overwhelming support they received and the willingness to help, Michelle and her mother decided to extend their efforts beyond the sticker exchange and began serving communities across the greater West Rand through their church, Eternal Life.

They say their work is not driven by recognition or personal gain, but by a calling to serve others and make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.

“Through these community WhatsApp groups, we’ve collected toys, baby clothes, clothes, and non-perishables that have gone as far as Pretoria. The need is big, and we always receive requests for assistance.

“We are grateful to the community’s generosity.

“It is a wonderful feeling to make a difference to those in need,” said Desiree.

Currently, they are collecting non-perishable food to make hampers for pensioners, board games for children, sanitary pads, clothing, toys, and stationery. These items will be donated to multiple charities across the West Rand to individuals who are in need.

“Anything pre-loved that can be used by someone else is welcome. We are not turning anything away,” they said.
