Booth hangs up his boots

Former Bafana defender calls it a day despite being offered a contract extension.

Former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth has called time on his career after 18 years as a professional footballer.

Booth was offered a contract extension by club side Bidvest Wits, but he rather opted to hang his boots following a relatively successful campaign with the Clever Boys which saw them reach the Nedbank Cup final.

“I thought our last campaign was a decent season and a good note to bow out on,” the centre-back told the Sowetan.

“I felt I contributed. But I also sat on the bench more often than I’ve ever done, and that has contributed to my decision.

“I’ve seen many players who had exemplary careers then stayed for one or two seasons too long. And people don’t have the greatest memories, so I think it’s important to leave at the right time.

“I did get an offer for an extension from [Wits coach] Gavin Hunt and [CEO] Jose Ferreira and I had to say thanks very much, but no thanks.”

The 37-year-old who started his footballing career at Cape Town Spurs in 1994 spent time in England, Russia and South Africa, notably winning two South African Premiership titles.
