Wushu action rocks Poortview

Wushu martial artists took part in the Gauteng Provincial and Open Wushu competitions in Poortview.

Martial artists from across Gauteng descended on Poortview for one of the biggest Wushu competitions on the local calendar.

The 2024 Provincial and Open Wushu Championship on April 20, hosted by the Gauteng Provincial Wushu Federation (GPWF), attracted athletes from eight Gauteng schools as well as competitors from the Free State.

Taolu routines can be performed with or without weapons.

According to GPWF secretary-general, Riana van Coller, the competition was endorsed and supported by the South African Wushu Federation (SAWF), which was founded by well-known local Kung-Fu legend, Shifu Jurgens Lamprecht. Lamprecht currently serves as president of the SAWF.

“The championship served as a selection base for athletes for Gauteng provincial colours,” Van Coller said.

“Athletes selected for Gauteng provincial colours will be allowed to participate in the national categories in the 2024 SAWF National Wushu Championships later in the year.”
