Roodies hosts braai-send off for their Comrades athletes

Road captain Judge Mongale is positive that Comrades athletes will do better than last time as they've had enough prep time.

The iconic Comrades Marathon this weekend will draw thousands of runners and spectators from around the world to the scenic roads of Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

The Roodepoort Athletics Club is happy and proud to send 32 athletes to participate in the gruelling 85.91km ultra-marathon.

The club hosted a send-off braai on Saturday, June 1, to encourage and support those who are going to represent the club in the marathon set to take place on Sunday, June 9 from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

According to road captain Judge Mongale, out of the 32, there are four novices (first-time runners) who have recently qualified to test their endurance, strength, and determination. The novices include Jacob van Fannoy, Peter Makaleng, Dean Schenkel and Clinton Kruis. He says they’ve spent an adequate amount of time training for the uphill ultramarathon.

“What we wish for the athletes is for all of them to finish the race and to better their previous times.”

Even though the send-off braai was a social gathering of loyal comrades coming together to support their heroes and heroines, it was filled with lovely messages and words of encouragement from those who have walked this path before, and it also commemorated true friendships and camaraderie.
