Bowling for legacy: Allen Lewis-Williams memorial raises funds for guide dogs
With another successful tournament in the books, bowlers and spectators left the club reflecting on a day filled with camaraderie, competitive spirit and the legacy of a man who continues to inspire the local bowling community.
The greens at Honeydew Bowling Club (HBC) were alive with energy on Friday, March 21, as 72 players gathered for the 11th annual Allen Lewis-Williams Memorial Tournament.

The event, held in honour of the beloved club member who passed away in 2011 at 60, has become a fixture on the local bowls calendar, attracting players from across the region.

The tournament was founded in 2013 by Allen’s brother, Joss Lewis-Williams, to celebrate his life and love for the sport. Over the years, it has grown into a highly anticipated competition, fostering friendly rivalry and strong bonds within the bowling community. Under clear skies, players showcased their skills during intense yet enjoyable competition.

As the final rounds approached, tensions mounted, with teams vying for the prestigious winning trophy. Overall, it was the trio Lyn Peens, Jeanette Nadel and Tony Nadel who claimed victory.

Beyond the competition, the tournament also serves a greater purpose, raising funds each year for the South African Guide-Dogs Association (Sagda), a cause close to Joss’s heart.

This year’s event raised R7 000 which was handed over to Pieter van Niekerk, Sagda’s head of public relations.

Club members and participants honoured Thomas McLean who passed away earlier this year. He served in numerous capacities over the years, including president, vice president, greenkeeper, bar manager, maintenance manager, and tournament official, and was also the sole organiser of the Allen Lewis- Williams Memorial Tournament in previous years.
