Duo conquers Two Oceans

Arno and Sarel Cilliers of the Roodepoort Athletics Club proudly ran the Two Oceans Marathon.

Father and Son Sarel (46) and Arno (20) Cilliers proudly completed the presti-gious Two Oceans Marathon on April 5 – a 56km gruelling test of endurance.

The pair, who have been part of the Roodepoort Athletics Club since 2015, showcased their remarkable teamwork and indivi-dual prowess, with Arno crossing the finish line in an impressive 05:15:00, while Sarel completed the course in 06:28:00.

“We were thrilled with our results,” said the proud father and son. “For Arno’s first ultramarathon, we believe his time was exceptional. As for me, I went into the event to enjoy the scenic route, and I certainly did that.”

Their journey to this achievement began 12 years ago, when Arno, then just eight years old, started running cross-country in primary school. Sarel, who had previously focused on other sports, decided to take up running again to accompany and support him, and thus began a beautiful father-son relationship built on shared miles, sweat and tears.

Since 2015, Sarel has gone on to participate in numerous marathons and ultramarathons, including three Two Oceans and the iconic Comrades Marathon. Arno, on the other hand, has gradually increased his running distances over the years and made his ultramarathon debut at the Two Oceans.

Sarel says they will continue embarking on other races together in the future, including the Comrades Marathon.
