Teen reaches highest level in Scouts

Seth McCloghrie completes his pioneering project for the Springbok Award.

Seth McCloghrie (17) of the Discovery Scouts has achieved the movement’s highest advancement level, the Springbok Award.

The award is the highest honour a Scout can earn in South Africa. It is regarded as the equivalent of the Gold President’s Award, but more demanding, and must be completed before the recipient’s 18th birthday.

Seth joined the Discovery Cubs at the age of seven and progressed to Scouts at 11. His achievement marks years of dedication, discipline and perseverance.

As part of the award requirements, he completed four major projects demonstrating skills in design, planning, project management, leadership, expedition and personal development.

For his community service component, Seth spearheaded the renovation of the Discovery Scouts hall and bathrooms. He also led a camp and expedition in the Drakensberg, testing his endurance and leadership under challenging conditions.

His pioneering project involved constructing a scale-model tower crane with the assistance of his troop. The structure was built using traditional Scouting techniques with gum poles and rope.

The model was presented to an inspector and fellow Scouts on Sunday, February 15.

Reflecting on his journey, Seth said, “The planning of these projects was quite stressful, but I’m thrilled to have reached this milestone. I’ve learned invaluable skills in leadership and project planning, which I’m confident will serve me well in the future.”

Seth will also lead a jumble sale on Saturday, April 4, from 09:00 to 14:00 at the 1st Discovery Scout Hall on the corner of Bird Street and Barkly Avenue.
