Sandton SPCA water supply runs dangerously low as borehole pump fails
A broken borehole and unreliable municipal water have left the Sandton SPCA in crisis. The shelter needs 3 000 to 5 000 litres of water daily and your donation could make the difference between struggle and survival.
The Sandton SPCA has issued an urgent appeal to the public after being left without a reliable water source to care for the hundreds of animals at its shelter.
What began as an intermittent supply issue has escalated into a full-scale crisis, following the breakdown of the organisation’s borehole pump, a key source of water for its operations.
According to the SPCA general manager Stephen Maila, the borehole pump has been declared beyond repair and must be replaced immediately.

To compound the problem, the shelter’s municipal water supply has become unreliable, leaving the facility without a consistent means to provide the 3 000 to 5 000 litres of water it needs daily.

“We are doing everything we can to keep our animals hydrated and safe, but our reserves are running dangerously low,” Maila said.
“Water is essential, not only for drinking but for cleaning, maintaining hygiene, and keeping our onsite clinic and charity shop operational. Without it, we simply cannot function.” The shelter currently cares for more than 200 animals, including dogs, cats, and various smaller creatures.
Staff and volunteers have been rationing donated water and prioritising animal welfare, but Maila warns that the situation has reached a critical point. “We’ve been relying on the kindness of our community.
People have been dropping off bottled and tank water but the need remains urgent. Every litre helps, and we’re appealing to anyone who can donate water to please assist as soon as possible.”

The matter has been reported to Johannesburg Water, but until municipal supplies stabilise and the borehole pump can be replaced, the organisation remains dependent on community support.
Maila urged residents and businesses to deliver water donations, bottled or bulk, directly to the Sandton SPCA premises.
“We are urgently appealing to our community for help. If you can assist by donating bottled water, tank water, or any quantity you can spare, please drop it off at the Sandton SPCA as soon as possible.
“Together, we can make sure our animals stay safe, healthy, and cared for during this difficult time.”
