JMPD urges caution as persistent rains make Johannesburg roads hazardous
With the South African Weather Service warning of continued rainfall and storms across Johannesburg, JMPD urges motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution and prioritise safety on the roads.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has issued a strong safety alert to motorists and pedestrians as persistent rainfall and thundershowers continue to affect large parts of the city.
According to the South African Weather Service, wet conditions are expected to continue, raising the risk of flooding, reducing visibility, and creating dangerous driving conditions.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said they are on high alert and monitoring major routes, but road users need to play their part. “We urge all road users to exercise extreme caution during this period. Wet roads are hazardous, and responsible driving can save lives.”
He said that motorists are encouraged to slow down, increase their following distance, and keep headlights on low beam to improve visibility. JMPD further warns drivers not to attempt crossing flooded roads or low-lying bridges, as fast-flowing water can be deceptive and extremely dangerous.
Drivers are also advised to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, with special attention to tyres, wipers, and brakes.

Pedestrians are not exempt from risk, especially near storm water drains and fast-flowing water.
Fihla is appealing to pedestrians to wear bright clothing, remain alert, and avoid risky crossings. “Let’s prioritise safety, patience, and responsible behaviour on the roads.”
Emergency incidents can be reported to the City of Johannesburg emergency helpline at 011 375 5911 or 112.
