Sandton shooting leaves one suspect dead, two injured

The original Rolex Gang was arrested in 2016.

Reports of a shooting in Sandton have left social media shaking after one suspect has been killed and two others injured during an alleged attempted robbery.

Earlier today (March 17), alleged Rolex Gang‘ members followed a victim to their hotel on Rivonia Road, Sandton. According to reports, bodyguards witnessed the attempted robbery and opened fire.

Update [16:30], provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili said, “It is alleged that two armed men believed to be part of the so-called ‘Rolex Gang’, approached a businessman’s vehicle trying to rob him of his Rolex watch. They tried to force him and his two bodyguards out of the car with a gun. The bodyguards reacted swiftly and shots were fired.”

The suspects tried to flee the scene. One fell from a gunshot wound on the scene while the other was found nearby with a fatal gunshot wound. The injured suspect is currently under police guard in hospital.

The suspects’ vehicle, a Suzuki and their unlicensed firearm have been seized by the police. The bodyguards’ two licensed firearms have also been seized.

All the firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing by the SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory.

The police are investigating a case of attempted robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm as well as opening an inquest docket.

The original Rolex Gang plagued Johannesburg’s northern suburbs back in 2014.

Betha Mphikeleni, Sipho Mabundla and George Mulaudzi were suspected of committing 12 robberies around the Sandton and Rosebank areas, however, on April 6, 2016, Judge Nomonde Mngqibisa found the trio guilty of nine armed robberies and the murder of their accomplice.
