Smart Meter Protest in Waldrift

Residents of Waldrift last night made their unhappiness clear when they blocked a section of the Old Johannesburg road and began burning tyres. They further demanded that they be addressed by ELM Mayor Simon Mofokeng.

VEREENIGIGNG. – A protest has broken out in the Waldrift area. It seems the reason for the protest is the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Smart Meter Project, which residents are now against.

Residents of Waldrift last night made their unhappiness clear when they blocked a section of the Old Johannesburg road and began burning tyres. They further demanded that they be addressed by ELM Mayor Simon Mofokeng.

However, it was agreed that Mayor Simon Mofokeng of the Emfuleni Local Municipality will address the group  today at 17:00.

Vereeniging Police Spokesperson Captain Fikile Funda confirms the incident adding that police are at the scene to maintain law and order.
