IN PICS: Almost 100 livestock killed during heavy rains in Evaton

A prominent businessman in Evaton lost a flock of sheep, goats and two cows due to heavy downpours in the region.

EVATON – About almost a hundred of his livestock including sheep, goats and cows were killed last week, when his steel kraal fused with correlated zinc situated in a low-lying area at Evaton (Masakeng) was filled with water.

According to eyewitnesses, the kraals couldn’t be seen from a distant as rainwater swallowed them.

Speaking to Sedibeng Ster, Mishack Mokhema, Director at Usizo Thuso Livestock said he has experienced heavy rain before, but nothing close to the recent disaster.

“We’ve experience heavy rains in the past, but nothing compared to this. I was home when I received a call that my cattle and sheep are swept away by water. We tried to redirect water but nothing could be done,” he said.

“I received another call from a member of the community told me he couldn’t see my kraals, right there I knew this was very serious.  We tried to save the livestock but we couldn’t. There was no way that we could try and save those cattle because had we tried, we would have died,” he said.

Mokhema said 98 sheep and goats combined died during the heavy rain.

“We also lost one cow and one cattle is missing we haven’t recovered. I haven’t calculated monitory value because I’m avoiding losing my mind. But you can imagine R2500 multiplied by that number is a lot of money,” he added.

Mokhema said this was his biggest loss since the commencement of his business in Livestock.

“I have lost livestock before due to theft, some of my cattle were runover by a taxi in the Golden Highway, but this is the biggest lost since start of business,” he said.

The well-known businessman said he is really affected by the disaster because he still owes the dead livestock.

“I buy livestock on a certain arrangement with suppliers and this stock, I had planned to sell it over the weekend and settle the arrangement. This is the same stock that died. I am badly affected for this great loss,” he said.
